Airman Missing From World War II Accounted For
The Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced today that servicemen, missing from World War II, have been accounted for and their remains are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

Army Air Forces 1st Lt. William P. Cook of Alameda, California; Flight Officer Arthur J. LeFavre of Red Bank, New Jersey; Staff Sgts. Maurice J. Fevold of Chicago, Frank G. Lane Jr. of Cleveland and Ward C. Swalwell Jr. of Chicago; and Sgt. Eric M. Honeyman of Alameda, California, have been accounted for and will be buried with full military honors. Cook was buried Oct. 18, 2014, in Oakland, California. Fevold was buried Oct. 20, 2014, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and Lane was buried May 2 in Willoughby, Ohio. Honeyman was buried on June 22 in Trail, British Columbia, Canada. LeFavre will be buried on Aug. 18 in Arlington National Cemetery. The group representing the crew will be buried on Aug. 18 in Arlington National Cemetery. Swalwell will be buried on Aug. 20 in Arlington National Cemetery.

On Dec. 23, 1944, Cook along with five other B-26G Marauder crewmembers took off from Saint Quentin, France, on a mission to bomb an enemy-held bridge in Eller, Germany. The aircraft was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire near Seffern, Germany, near the Belgium border.

Following World War II, the Army Graves Registration Command (AGRC) conducted extensive field investigations and was unable to locate the aircraft and the crew. In May 1949, AGRC concluded the crew members were unrecoverable.

In 2006, a group of researchers from Airwar History Working Group Rhine-Moselle and History Flight -99th Division MIA Project located the wreckage of a B-26G associated with the loss of this crew, near Allmuthen, Belgium and notified the U.S. Army Mortuary Affairs Activity Europe. In 2007, a Department of Defense (DoD) team investigated the site and recommended it for excavation.

In 2012 and 2013, another DoD team excavated the crash site and recovered human remains, aircraft wreckage, and personal effects.

To identify Honeyman's remains, scientists from DoD and AFDIL used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools including, partial Y-Chromosome Short Tandem Repeat (Y-STR) DNA, which matched Honeyman's paternal-line cousins.

To identify Cook's remains, scientists from DoD and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools, including mitochondrial DNA, which matched Cook's maternal-line cousins.

To identify LeFavre's remains scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools, including, mitochondrial DNA, which matched LeFavre's maternal-line niece and grandniece.

To identify Lane's remains, scientists from DPAA and AFDIL used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools including, partial Y-Chromosome Short Tandem Repeat (Y-STR) DNA, which matched Lane's paternal-line nephew.

To identify Fevold's remains, scientists from DoD and AFDIL used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools including, mitochondrial DNA, which matched Fevold's maternal-line niece.

To identify Swalwell's remains scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools, including, mitochondrial DNA, which matched Swalwell's maternal-line sister and niece.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for Americans, who went missing while serving our country, visit the DPAA website at www.dpaa.mil or call 703-699-1420.

Veterans of WWII (or their widows) will each receive a distinctive pin at the ceremonies commemorating their service. The ceremonies are designed to honor all surviving and departed veterans who served honorably in WWII. At the end of the war in 1945, Americans all across the nation shouted, cried, rejoiced, exalted, prayed and sang the praises of the country's fighting forces who defended the nation by bravely combating enemy forces on several continents. Kat Miller, director of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, said, "That patriotic spirit is rekindled each year during the 'Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive' campaign that serves to honor World War Two veterans. It also serves to keep patriotic  memories alive in the minds and hearts of the public." Her department is hosting the twin laudatory events at both ends of the state.

“Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.”
This annual event brings together the Commanders and delegates of the Order’s Regions, Departments, Chapters and Units to elect the National Leadership of the Order for the upcoming year. A number of key events coincide with the Convention including a welcoming address by Representative Dina Titus and the keynote address by the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Bob McDonald on Tuesday evening, August 4, at the Joint Opening Ceremony. The organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.," (MOPH) was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all combat wounded veterans and active duty men and women who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America's military history. Most importantly, through veteran service, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. Programs of the MOPH include VA Volunteer Service, JROTC Leadership Award, Scholarships, Americanism, Purple Heart Trail and Cities, Welfare, and numerous community service programs, all with the objective of service to Veterans and their families.

Rose Parade Keeping the Spirit of '45 Alive

Rose Parade Keeping the Spirit of '45 Alive by Showcasing Inspiring Stories of America's Greatest Generation

Louis Zamperini, hero of "Unbroken," and legendary Japanese American WWII veterans honored with floats

This may be the last time America can come together to say 'Thank you!' to the men and women of the WWII generation who did so much to assure a better future for their children and their children's children.
Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) December 31, 2014
The countdown to the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II begins on New Years Day when floats honoring famous members of America's 'greatest generation' will be featured in the 126th Tournament of Roses Parade. The parade begins at 8:00 a.m. PST
The theme for this year's Rose Parade is "Inspiring Stories," - a tribute to those who have loved unconditionally, persevered courageously, endured patiently, and accomplished much on behalf of others.
"We were thinking about an inspirational theme, a theme where we would actually lift people’s lives up.” said Richard Chinen, chairman and president of the Tournament of Roses.
Chinen said this year's Rose Parade theme was inspired by the life of Louis Zamperini which was documented in the best selling book "Unbroken," by Pulitzer Prize winning author Laura Hillebrand. A movie based on the book and directed by Angelina Jolie opened nationwide on Christmas Day. Zamperini ran in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and later survived 47 days in shark infested waters during WWII when his plane crashed in the Pacific, followed by two years of intense brutality in a Japanese POW camp.
Zamperini was chosen to be the grand marshal for the 2015 Rose Parade last May but died on July 2 and will be only the second individual to be posthumously honored as the grand marshal in the history of the parade. He will be represented by his family who will ride in the grand marshall's car behind a riderless white horse, and in front of a float depicting the challenges Zamperini overcame during his life that was produced by the Torrance Rose Bowl Association.
Also honored in this year's parade are Japanese American WWII veterans who fought in Europe as members of the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Unit and 100th Infantry Battalion, and the Military Intelligence Service that is credited with having helped shorten the war in the Pacific by two years. Together, they became the most highly decorated units, by size and length of service, in the history of the U.S. Army, and received numerous decorations, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. Their float, bearing their motto "Go For Broke," was entered by the City of Alhambra, CA.
"I was deeply inspired by the stories of these young men who sacrificed so much for our country, despite the fact that many of their families were in internment camps simply because of their Japanese ancestry," said Gary Yamauchi, mayor of Alhambra. "We hope our example will encourage other cities and towns in America to make sure that future generations will remember the heroes of WWII from their communities."
The Rose Bowl WWII floats will be the first in a series of events and activities that are planned for this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.
"The Rose Parade and the cities of Alhambra and Torrance have done a great service by focusing attention on the importance of preserving the inspiring stories of the men and women of the WWII generation ," said Warren Hegg, national programs director of "Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive," a nonprofit grassroots coalition of organizations that are planning 70th anniversary events and activities this year.
The group will be meeting in San Diego in February to finalize marketing and media strategies for events honoring the contributions of America's airpower, ground forces, seaborne services and Home Front during WWII.
http://www.Spiritof45Conference.org
"This year may be the last time families and communities throughout America can come together to say 'Thank you!' to the men and women who were the ordinary heroes who did so much to assure a better future for their children and their children's children," said Hegg.
The centerpiece of the year's activities will be a 70th Anniversary Commemoration on the weekend of August 14 - 16, that will include a mass "Kiss in" in Times Square, flyovers by WWII aircraft, events featuring '40's style music and entertainment, oral history interviews, and wreath laying ceremonies at multiple locations around the world. A cross country convoy of WWII vehicles that is being promoted as the "longest Veterans Day Parade in history" is planned for the fall.
"We want everyone to say, 'Here we come, 2015!'" said Chinen.
